Spring Cleaning? Start with Your Inventory

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to take stock of what you actually have. Here's how to do a full home inventory audit.

Why Spring Cleaning and Inventory Go Hand-in-Hand

Spring cleaning isn't just about dusting and vacuuming. It's the perfect opportunity to take stock of what you actually have in your home — and get rid of what you don't need.

An inventory audit during spring cleaning helps you:

  • Find expired items lurking in the back of cabinets
  • Identify duplicate products you forgot about
  • Clear out items you'll never use
  • Start fresh with an accurate count of everything

The Room-by-Room Audit

Kitchen (Allow 30-45 minutes)

Fridge

Take everything out, shelf by shelf. Check every expiration date. Wipe down shelves while they're empty. As you put items back, scan each one into your inventory app.

Freezer

The freezer is where food goes to be forgotten. Pull everything out, toss anything with freezer burn or no label, and organize what's left by category.

Pantry

Follow the pantry organization guide for a thorough approach. At minimum, check all dates and remove expired items.

Bathroom (Allow 15-20 minutes)

Medicine Cabinet

This is critical. Expired medication should never be used. Check every bottle, every box. Dispose of expired medications properly — many pharmacies accept them for safe disposal.

Under the Sink

Count your cleaning supplies, personal care products, and extras. You probably have more shampoo and toothpaste than you realize.

Cleaning Supplies (Allow 10 minutes)

Gather all cleaning products from around the house into one place. Count what you have, check for expired or depleted products, and organize by type.

The Digital Advantage

Scanning as You Go

The smartest approach is to audit and digitize at the same time. As you check each item during your spring cleaning:

  1. Scan the barcode (or add manually)
  2. Set the correct quantity
  3. Add the expiration date if visible
  4. Put it back in its organized spot

The Stash Check Shortcut

If you already use Our Stash, the Stash Check feature makes this even faster. Instead of starting from scratch, it shows you items that are probably outdated — swipe to confirm or remove. You can audit your whole inventory in 2 minutes.

After the Audit: Maintaining the System

The 3 Habits That Keep It Going

  1. Scan when you shop — Snap your receipt or scan barcodes as you put groceries away
  2. Check when prompted — Complete Stash Checks when notified (every few days)
  3. Glance before you shop — Check your inventory and shopping list before heading to the store

Make It a Tradition

Spring cleaning is the perfect time for a full inventory reset. But you don't have to wait — a quarterly mini-audit (15 minutes, once every 3 months) keeps everything accurate year-round.
